What Is the Vata Part of You?

Do you ever start three projects before finishing one? Get your best idea mid-walk? Talk fast and a little breathless when you're excited to tell someone something? Change your mind a few times before you land on a decision? That's not just "you being you." That's Vata.

Vata Isn't Just a Season — It's an Element in All of Us

We talk about Vata season (air and space, running roughly mid-September to mid-January), but Vata isn't only something happening outside. It's one of the three elemental forces present in every single one of us, regardless of which dosha you lean toward. When Vata season arrives, it doesn't introduce something foreign — it turns up the volume on the air and space that were already there.

That's why this time of year can feel like a switch flipping. The ideas come faster. The energy moves quicker. And if you're not paying attention, that quick, light, mobile quality can tip from exciting into scattered.

My Own Vata Has Been Loud Lately

I see it clearly in myself this season. I'll start three ideas before I've finished one — not because I lack focus, but because my mind genuinely moves fast enough to see the next thing before the first one's done. I get my best thinking done walking, mid-motion, in that loose flow state where ideas arrive instead of being forced. I go back and forth on decisions longer than I probably need to, but it's really just care — wanting to land on the version that actually works, not just the first one.

I'll deviate from a recipe halfway through and wing it, and it usually turns out better than if I'd followed the instructions exactly. I get excited telling a story and talk fast, words tripping over each other.

And then there's the other side: I push through work and wait too long to eat. I have a hard time sitting still until I finally crash. That's Vata's edge — all that same air and mobility, unanchored.

Naming It Is the First Step

None of this is a flaw to fix. Quick thinking, creative range, intuition in the kitchen, enthusiasm that moves fast — that's Vata doing exactly what it's good at. The goal was never to shut it down. It's to notice when it's running the show without an anchor underneath it, and give it one before it spends itself out.

That's really what Vata season is asking of us: not less air, not less space, not less of the ideas or the excitement — just something steady underneath it, so all that movement has somewhere to land.

Where do you see your own Vata showing up this season?
