Nasya Oil: Your Seasonal Ritual for Clear Breathing and Lasting Wellness

If there's one small ritual that can make a big difference through the change of seasons, it's Nasya oil. Used for centuries in Ayurveda, this simple practice of applying herbal oil to the nasal passages is especially powerful during Vata season (fall and early winter) and Kapha season (late winter through spring) — the two times of year when our bodies are most vulnerable to imbalance and illness.

What Is Nasya Oil?

Nasya is a form of nasal therapy rooted in Ayurveda. It involves applying herbalized oils into the nasal passages and in Ayurvedic tradition, the nose is considered the gateway to the brain, mind, and consciousness. Because of how directly the nasal passageway connects to deeper channels in the body, oils and herbs applied here absorb more efficiently than through many other methods.

Nasya oil is typically a base oil — often sesame or other grounding oils — infused with Ayurvedic herbs chosen to soothe, protect, and clarify. I personally use and love Banyan Botanicals' Nasya Oil because it's made with certified organic herbs and is formulated to work across all three doshas. (Link to oil)

How to Use It

The ritual itself takes just a few minutes and fits easily into your morning or bedtime routine. I find it especially helpful living in a dry climate to do this at night for better breathing while I sleep.

Lie on your back and tilt your head so your nostrils face the ceiling — you can hang your head off the edge of a bed or place a small pillow beneath your neck. Apply 3 to 5 drops into one nostril and take a few deep breaths pulling the oil in deeper. Repeat on the other nostril. Rest for a few minutes to allow the oil to absorb.

Consistency matters more than quantity here. Even just a few times a week can make a noticeable difference in how you feel as the seasons shift.

Why Use It? The Seasonal Benefits

In Vata season (fall and early winter), the air turns dry, cold, and windy — qualities that directly mirror Vata's nature. Our nasal passages feel the effects first: dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity. Daily nasal lubrication moisturizes dry nasal passages, soothes delicate mucous membranes, and helps relieve sinus stagnation. Think of it as the equivalent of moisturizing your skin — just for the inside.

In Kapha season (late winter into spring), the air becomes heavier, cool, and damp. This is the time when congestion, sluggishness, and seasonal illness tend to peak. Nasya oil works as a kind of daily filter, lubricating the nasal passages to help block allergens, pollutants, and environmental irritants from entering the body's deeper channels — strengthening immunity at one of its most vulnerable entry points.

Beyond physical wellness, Nasya also helps clear mental fog that builds with seasonal imbalance — many people notice sharper focus, clearer vision, and a greater sense of ease after regular use.

Other benefits include releasing tension held in the head, soothing accumulated stress, and supporting overall clarity in the mind and senses— making it as much a mental wellness practice as a physical one.
