The Pitta Evening Wind-Down Routine
Your evenings are where Pitta season is won or lost.
Most of the advice you hear about summer is daytime advice — what to eat, when to move, how to stay cool during peak heat. But if your evenings are still running hot, none of that daytime effort gets to land. Pitta doesn't clock out at sunset. Without a real wind-down, the heat and intensity of the day just keep going straight into your sleep.
WHY EVENINGS MATTER MORE FOR PITTA THAN OTHER TYPES
Pitta is driven, focused, and easily pulled into "just one more thing." That's an asset during the day and a liability at night. The same fire that gets you through a packed schedule can keep your mind running long after your body needs to rest — replaying the day, planning tomorrow, answering one last email.
A body that's still mentally "on" doesn't cool down, no matter how comfortable the room is. The result is familiar to a lot of Pitta types: lying down tired but wired, or falling asleep fine and waking up around 2 or 3am with your mind already going.
THE WIND-DOWN ROUTINE
None of this requires an overhaul — just a shift in the last hour or two before bed.
Dim the lights early. Bright light in the evening keeps Pitta alert. Switching to lamps or warmer lighting an hour before bed signals to your body that the day is actually ending.
Cool the room, not the mind with screens. A cooler bedroom supports Pitta's need to release heat, but scrolling to relax does the opposite — it keeps the mind stimulated even as the body tries to slow down. Trade the last twenty minutes of screen time for something quieter.
Do a short self-massage (abhyanga). A few minutes of warm sesame or coconut oil on the feet and scalp before bed is one of the most reliably calming practices in Ayurveda — it draws heat and energy downward and out of the head, where Pitta tends to concentrate at the end of the day.
Write it down, then close the notebook. If your mind is still working through the day, get it out of your head and onto paper — a quick brain dump of anything unfinished. The goal isn't to solve it tonight, just to stop carrying it.
Sip something warm, not stimulating. Warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg, or a caffeine-free herbal tea, supports the shift from "on" to "off" far better than anything cold or sweet late in the evening.
WHAT TO SKIP IN THE EVENING
A few common evening habits work against Pitta specifically: intense exercise after dinner, heated conversations or conflict resolution right before bed, and rich or spicy food late at night. All three keep your internal fire elevated exactly when it needs to be settling.
THE SIMPLE RULE TO REMEMBER
If your days are cool but your evenings are still hot, the day's work doesn't fully pay off. Give the last hour before bed the same intention you give the rest of your Pitta season routine, and sleep — not just food and activity — becomes part of what keeps you balanced.
