Are You Running Hot? A Beginner's Guide to Pitta Dosha

Sharp mind. Strong opinions. Perpetually warm. If this sounds like you, Ayurveda has a name for it.

You're the person who always needs the window open. Who gets irritable when lunch runs late. Who takes on too much, executes brilliantly, and then wonders why you're burned out by Thursday.

Or maybe it's more subtle. Your skin flares in summer. Your digestion is strong until it isn't — and when it goes wrong, it really goes wrong. You have high standards for yourself and everyone around you, and sometimes those standards tip into criticism you didn't mean to voice out loud.

In Ayurveda, this isn't a personality flaw or a health problem without a name. It's Pitta — and once you understand it, a lot of things start to make sense.

WHAT IS PITTA?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine from India, built on the understanding that everything in nature — including the human body — is made up of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements combine to form three fundamental energies called doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Each dosha governs specific functions in the body and mind. And each person is born with a unique combination of all three, with one or two typically dominant.

Pitta is the dosha of fire and water. Its job is transformation — digesting food, processing information, metabolizing experience. Every time your body breaks down a meal, your mind works through a problem, or your skin tans in the sun, Pitta is at work.

In balance, Pitta produces some of the most admirable human qualities: sharp intellect, natural leadership, strong digestion, warmth, and the kind of focused drive that gets things done. Out of balance, that same fire burns too bright — and the body and mind start to show it.

WHAT DOES PITTA LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?

Before you can recognize Pitta imbalance, it helps to understand the baseline qualities of Pitta itself.

Pitta is: hot, sharp, light, oily, liquid, and spreading.

Think about what those qualities look like in a person. Hot — they run warm, often sleep with fewer covers, feel the heat more intensely than others. Sharp — precise thinkers, quick to cut to the point, sometimes cutting in conversation too. Light — not heavy or slow. Oily — naturally good skin when balanced, prone to oiliness or inflammation when not. Spreading — Pitta doesn't stay contained. When it's high, it spreads — inflammation moves through the body, intensity moves through the mind.

Physically, a Pitta-dominant person often:

- Has a medium, athletic build

- Runs warm and sweats easily

- Has strong digestion — and strong hunger (do not skip their meals)

- Has sharp, penetrating eyes

- Has skin that is sensitive, prone to redness, rashes, or acne

- Has fine or thinning hair, sometimes with early greying

Mentally and emotionally, a Pitta person tends to:

- Be highly organized, focused, and goal-driven

- Have strong opinions and natural confidence

- Be competitive — with others and with themselves

- Have a sharp sense of humor that can tip into sarcasm

- Feel things intensely, even when they appear calm on the surface
